2007 National Student PSR Conference Report

The US student branch of IPPNW, Student Physicians for Social Responsibility, held its 2007 National Conference entitled “Medical Consequences of War” from February 23-25 at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Sunday was dedicated to action. The day began with a heartfelt and encouraging talk by Dr. Curren Warf about integrating values with one’s professional life, and pursuing health advocacy and social justice as a lifelong career. This was followed by a presentation by Karen Abrashkin and Tova Fuller on the SPSR national project “PSR’s Prescription for a Secure and Healthy World.” This project aims toward eliminating nuclear weapons and halting global warming through local and national action. Currently, events towards these goals are underway within physician and student chapters throughout the US; medical students in SPSR have joined forces with the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) as a part of a nationwide taskforce called the Medical Alliance to Stop Global Warming. Students also participated in a session led by NWIP, and then broke up into smaller workshops to discuss such topics as lobbying, physician activism, and how to energize one’s own Student PSR chapter. Sunday also featured a “Target Palo Alto” hosted by NWIP.
