Over
the past few years, IPPNW has been building close ties with the International Federation
of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA),
a student organization representing 800,000 medical students from 68
countries. The IFMSA is a forum for sharing ideas and expertise among
medical students on public health, medical education, medical ethics
and peace, health care for refugees and disadvantaged populations.
In
July 1999, recognizing that IPPNW and the IFMSA share a common
goal of peace and disarmament, and that increased collaboration between
the two organizations through the establishment of formal relations
will strengthen the medical movement and foster the education and
involvement of medical students in issues of peace, disarmament and
human rights, IPPNW and the IFMSA adopted a joint resolution outlining
seven steps toward establishing official relations between the two
organizations. The resolutions includes the following steps:
- designating one
organizational liaison each to serve
as primary contact persons;
- inviting and welcoming at
least one representative to
participate
in the respective governing council meetings of IPPNW and IFMSA as
official non-voting observers;
- endeavoring to define an
annual joint IPPNW-IFMSA
program of action and cooperation;
- publicizing the work of the
other organization in
newsletters, mailings, and other vehicles;
- exchanging national contact
information and promoting
collaboration
between the IPPNW physicians, medical students and health care workers
and the IFMSA medical students at the local level;
- cooperating on biannual IFMSA
leadership training
workshops,
including an exchange of expertise on issues such as grassroots
campaigning, political efficacy, conflict resolution, fundraising,
financial management, and strategic planning; and
- communicating and
coordinating with respect to all
approaches to
funding agencies that involve the use of the other organization's name.
All
of the above resolutions have been successfully implemented over
the past three years, and ties between the two organizations continue
to grow steadily.
