A Call from the Medical Community for the Prevention of Small Arms

On August 28th - 29th, 2007, the Nepalese affiliate of IPPNW PSRN (Physicians for Social Responsibility Nepal) organized a 2-day Asian students' meeting in Kathmandu. This meeting focused on preventing small arms violence.

South Asian Students Meet 2007

Objectives

  • To be self aware about small arm tragedies.
  • To know the ways adapted in some countries for tackling small arm violence.
  • Development of ways of handling the problems of small arms on our part through brainstorming and following the examples of other countries.
  • Dissemination of our findings to the media for mass awareness.

Activities

Day 1

  • Discussion of student activities in respective countries
  • Networking to fight against common problems
  • Motivate students without national chapters to start one

Day 2

  • Theoretical session on small arms by an arms specialist
  • Group work aimed towards designing solutions
  • Dissemination of our findings to media
  • Development of consensus for regional work to achieve the goal

Expectations at the end of the programme

  • Self awareness
  • Development of a formal forum in order to extend IPPNW programs to our part of the globe.
  • Development of solutions at our level so that we can include them in our local projects.
