February 2006 Report by Ryoma Kayano
These two years, there was a quite big improvement in Japanese students activity. In 2005 there were two Student Conferences in Japan. In August at the IPPNW North Asian conference in Hiroshima we also has a student conference. There were 63 Japanese students and 7 foreign students including Khagendra Dahal the International Student Representative from Nepal, Michael Gnilo from the Philippines, the South Asian Student Representative of IPPNW, 2 Chinese students, a German IPPNW student and others. We talked about the A-Bomb and ways to abolish nuclear weapons. In the conference, this is quite exciting for me, IFMSA students from Tokyo joined. From March, 2005, I had planned with the representative of IFMSA JAPAN SCORP a joint student conference and in August we held this joint student conference in Hiroshima together. After the meeting, me and Satoshi Wakao (IFMSA JAPAN SCORP Representative) had a quite good relationship and we will organize a Student Study Tour in Hiroshima in August 2006. This study tour is opened to every students who would like to join and study. IPPNW and IFMSA relationship became strong in Japan too, as in Europe.
In October, Nagasaki students organized a Student Conference called the "Nagasaki Students Forum" at Nagasaki university. The theme of the conference was “War”. We invited 4 lecturers and listened to different way to think about war: Mizuko Tokunaga, a Japanese nurse who works in Africa and received the Florence Nightingale Medal, Kosuke Tuneoka, a free journalist and photographer who works in the Middle East, Hideo Tutiyama, the Representative of the Nagasaki Citizen Organization for World Peace and Zen Wenbin, a Consul General of China who has worked in Nagasaki. There were 150 students who joined the conference. This was a really original event that we made by ourselves!
Future Plans: In August of 2006, we will have the Student Study Tour in Hiroshima and in September we'll join the IPPNW World Congress in Helsinki. In October we'll be involved in the 2nd Global Assembly in Nagasaki for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons as representative of students.
