Peace and Development through Health

7th National Conference of Indian Doctors for Peace and Development
5th - 6th of March, 2005, Hyderabad

The 7th National conference of IDPD demanded complete abolition of nuclear weapons, end to arms trade, declare South Asia a Nuclear Free Zone and diversion of funds to provide health care to all. It was presided over by Dr L S Chawla, President of the organisation. Inaugurating the conference, Dr.Ron McCoy Co-President of the International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) called upon the medical personnel to come forward to work for peace, which forms the basis of any developmental process including health and education. Peace is not just a political issue but more so a health issue as health has been found to be most seriously affected in the event of war and violence. ‘We the doctors and the medical students have to come forward to strengthen peace and harmony’ he said. Delivering his talk on how the IPPNW has been working for this, co-president of the IPPNW Dr Gunnar Westberg said that while on one side we have been working to build public opinion against war and violence, we have also been lobbying with the decision makers through a direct dialogue with them in different countries.

Through this we have been able to appraise them of the dangers of nuclear weapons and thus the necessity for their complete elimination. Dr Mahesh Maskey Vice President of the South Asian Region of the IPPNW expressed hope at that improvement in relations between India and Pakistan, even though slow, is a positive development for the whole region. But, he said that the developments in Nepal where all democratic institutions have been suppressed is a matter of serious concern for the whole region as it can lead to further escalation of violence. Dr L S Chawla, president of IDPD in his remarks said that the South Asian region has become insecure after nuclear weapon tests by both India and Pakistan. During the visit to Karachi by the delegation of the IDPD on 12 December 2004 at the invitation of the Pakistan Doctors for Peace and Development (PDPD), both the organisations resolved to work in unison for elimination of these weapons and to declare South Asia a Nuclear Free Zone. Dr C.M.Habeebullah patron of the organizing committee said that the doctors have to work hard to put on end to all types of violence including the communal and caste related violence. Dr V.S.Reddy chairman organizing committee welcomed the delegates. Dr Janardhan Reddy presented vote of thanks.
