IPPNW-Students Canada:
Student Physicians for Global Survival

Reports

2007-2008 Report

Since Helsinki, Student Physicians for Global Survival (sPGS) Ottawa has supported an ICAN launch at Parliament and collaborated with others to plan for activities on World AIDS Day. Additionally, sPGS held a “peaceful play day” for kids in Ottawa where medical students and children sat together and talked about peace, peaceful activities and created art around the topic of peace. Furthermore, sPGS arranged talks to the University of Ottawa student body by David Suzuki, a major figure head of environmental science in Canada and Major Brent Beardsley, who spoke on “Lesson’s Learned and Not Learned in Rwanda.” Finally, members of sPGS Ottawa approached the Faculty of Medicine to propose that the Faculty begin teaching Medical students about environmentally sustainable healthcare; the faculty was receptive to the idea. Members in Vancouver also tried to integrate the same topic into the Medical school curriculum, but the results are currently inconclusive. Work will be done in the future to pursue more awareness programs for environmental sustainable healthcare in addition to the organization of a Target X campaign to facilitate awareness of the topic of nuclear weapons in Canada.
