PSR-B Convention-2008, June 2nd, 2008

Regional convention of Physicians For Social Responsibility (PSR-B) was held On 1, June, 2008 at Medical Education Unit in Mymensingh Medical College. In this convention PSR-B has opened a new unit in Mymensingh Medical College of Bangladesh.  Mymensingh Medical College is one of the leading medical college of Bangladesh with 1000 bedded hospital. The convention was presided by Dr. Kamrunnahar, Associate professor and Head of the Department, Gynae, Mymensingh Medical College and Dr. Kamrul Hasan Khan, Associate professor Bangladesh Sheik Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), also the president of PSR-B was the chief guest. Dr. Tito Mitra, Assistant professor Medicine, Dr. Babul Chandra Dey Shishir, Dr. Kripadhan was also present in the meeting. PSR-B student members was also present in the meeting.

A new executive committee has been formed for the future activities in Mymensingh Unit. The newly elected physician committee members are Chairman- Dr. kamrunnahar, Vice chairman – Dr. Mirza Manzurul Haque, General secretary Dr. Babul Chandra Dey Shishir, Join secretary- Dr. Kripadhan, Accountant- Dr. Tito Mitra, Press secretary – Dr. Raju, Office secretary – Dr. Shohag, Organizing secretary – Dr. Ani and genera member K. M. Nahid ul Haque and Shafayet Mohammad.

A student committee was also formed form the students of each year. The members of the student committee are Md. Shamim Chowdhury (5th year), Md. Shafayed Mahommad (5th year), Md. Mehedi Hasan (4th year), Ahmedur Rahmand Sabuj (3rd year) and Md. Shoib Hasan(2nd year).

Dr. Kamrul Hasan Khan describes the objectives and activities of PSR-B. He explained why physician should involve in the social activities. In his speech he said there is a big distance between doctors and patient, for improvement of this situation he stressed on doctor patient relationship. He also talked about proper formulation of health policy and planning, protects health right of the individual and improvement of health and medical education. He also stressed on improvement health of industrial and garment workers who are greatly contributing our economy. He also discussed about health effects of weapons of mass destruction and small arms violence.

Newly elected chairman of PSR-B Mymensingh Medical College Unit Dr. Kamrunnahar said that she is very happy to join PSR-B. She also said she will be always available for good works. She said the future activities of PSR-B Mymensingh Medical College Unit will be decided soon after discussing with its members.

Dr. Tito Mitra emphasized on the doctor patient relationship and describes the importance of PSR-B to change the situation. He also said he is very happy to be involved in PSR-B Mymensingh Medical College Unit. He is hopeful that PSR-B will able to make a pivotal role in the social development.

Former national representative and South East Asia regional student representative of IPPNW Dr. Moshiur Rahman Khasru was the moderator of the meeting. During discussion session he described different aspects of international work of IPPNW and PSRB. He emphasized on the issue of small arms violence in the developing countries like Bangladesh. He also talked about necessity of antismoking movement for peace of the society. His presentation was highly impressive for the new members.

General secretary Dr. Babul Chandra Dey Shishir said it is very important for the society to be involved in the social development because the physicians are the intelligent part of the society. Join secretary- Dr. Kripadhan also addressed at the meeting.

National student representative K. M. Nahid ul Haque brief about 18th world congress of IPPNW in New Delhi. He discussed how students of different countries is working for the peace and what they are doing in their countries. He also urged to the new student members to be an active member and spread the movements of IPPNW and PSR for the peace of the society. Md. Shamim Chowdhury and Md. Shafayet Mohammad also gave their opinion about future activities of PSR-B and their past experience of PSR-B activities to the new members.
