Beverly Lorraine Ho
Manila, Philippines

Nominated: "Best newcomer"

Introduction Hi, my name is Beverly Lorraine Ho, currently a 5th year medical student and medical intern at the Philippine General Hospital. I hope to participate in the BAN Tour during the summer of 2010, as this would be my first cycling trip with my IPPNW friends and I’m certainly very excited! This I believe is a rare opportunity for 30 very diverse bikers to collectively speak up and make the issue of nuclear weapons a concern for everyone.

Motivation

As doctors, we protect HEALTH - primarily though preventive measures – thus we advise the regular check-ups, screening measures, and various forms of immunizations. The main point of which is to eliminate threats to health. Same is true for protecting LIFE. When one envisions a life free from threats, then one should actively campaign for elimination of these threats that compromise our happy and safe existence, and nuclear weapons is certainly one of them among others.

In my 2 years as member of IPPNW, I have been able to share my vision of a nuclear free world to families, friends, colleagues, and fellow students in the university. However, having only one non-operating but possibly soon-to-be opened nuclear power plant, the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant is probably the only thing “nuclear” most people can relate to. Thus, thought of a nuclear war is a very bizarre and unlikely scenario for many Filipinos, breeding apathy about this issue in the long run. But hey, who says only countries with nuclear arsenals will be affected once this kind of war ensues?
