LAST CALL for NPT RevCon in NY PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator

Within two months the NPT RevCon is taking place in New York and we want to invite you to join the students' activities which are planned by the Nuclear Weapons Inheritance Project. For those planning to attend the NPT Review Conference have to send to Katharina ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) their personal dates as soon as possible. The last registration will be accepted until 19th of March at maximum.

The NWIP is working closely with Ban All Nukes generation (BANg), an international youth network. Our slogan for the actions and delegations to the conference is: “Global Zero Now!”.  The bulk of our activities will be between Friday 30st April - Monday 10th May

Postcard Campaign for Global Zero - Our voices must be heard because we are the generation that will inherit the nuclear burden. To make our voice audible we are running a postcard campaign for 'Global Zero Now!'. BANg has designed a double postcard: One half will be sent to the national governments - the other will be brought directly to the NPT conference in New York.

While in New York, we will be participating in the following activities:

  • Roads to Global Zero: We are going to try to talk with diplomats from all nine nuclear weapon states. We want to know from them which way they are going to go in order to reach Global Zero. After that we want to paint lines from all embassies to the 'Global Zero Place' at the United Nations in New York
  • Critical Mass for Global Zero - In order to raise awareness we will have an action called 'Critical Mass'. We will meet at the 'Global Zero Place', swarm in different directions and collect people from the streets to form 'subcritical masses'. Those masses of activists will come back together to form a 'Critical Mass', like the explosion of an atomic bomb. The symbolic release of energy will be balloons flying into the sky. Attached to each of them will be the second postcard that will reach someone in New York and deliver your message for 'Global Zero Now'. (This is expected to take place on May 7th, Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza)
  • Workshops: we will have workshops for students to prepare them for the dialogues with diplomats
  • Peace Conference: We will attend the Peace Conference on May 1st
  • Youth Rally: We will join the youth rally organised by Japanese students on May 4th

We also invite students to join the opportunity to negotiate an Article of the Model Nuclear Weapons Convention. The negotiations will be simulated in New York  by a group of German and international students. Prior to the simulation, they will spend a few days doing research for the simulation, talking to diplomats of the countries they simulate, and preparing a position paper. The simulation is jointly organised by the International Network of Engineers and Scientists Against Proliferation (INESAP) and two German universities, and is expected to take place in New York between May 3rd and 14th 2010. This is a parallel event to our activities.

NWIP students will get the chance to join this event.

If you want to help us, want to be involved in the organising process, want to get more information or if you have questions or new ideas, just send  a short message to ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

The last NPT RevCon was arguably a disappointment, and it's more important than ever that we keep a strong voice calling for nations to disarm. US President Barack Obama supported nuclear disarmament in his election campaign, and the leaders of other nations (including nuclear powers like Russia, and middle powers like Australia) have made encouraging statements in recent months.

Now is the time to  call them to make good on their promises - come help us remind them that nuclear abolition can't wait!

With best wishes for peace,

Katharina and Misha

Dear IPPNW Students,

as you may know already, next year, the city of Basel will host the IPPNW World Congress and, true to tradition, we're organizing a bike tour to the congress in order to raise the issue of nuclear abolition in different European countries. We've been to Estonia, Russia, Finnland, the UK and India on our bikes ... now its time to take on Central Europe... so, from August 14th-24th, around 30 daring cyclists from all over the world will bike up the Rhine River, passing through Germany, France and Switzerland on their way to the 2010 IPPNW World Congress in Basel. During the tour, we will make our call for a Nuclear Weapons Free Europe heard, will meet with media representatives and politicians, hold public demonstrations and visit the last remaining nuclear weapons base in Germany in order to add our voices to a loud call for finally removing these remnants of the Cold War from Europe. More than 20 years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, young doctors and medical students from East and West, from the wealthy industrialized countries and from the Global South will join together once more for a bike tour again nuclear weapons. Are you interested?
